My most recent completed project in my desk in my office. I’m not adverse to buying furniture if it fits my needs. In fact, I started out trying to find a standing desk that would work. A standing desk is simply a desk that is high enough that it is comfortable to work at while standing. Often, you also have a high chair/stool to sit on for extended work times. I needed one that would have desk space for work and the ability to hold my computer equipment (since it is primarily a computer desk). I also desired some drawers.
Here is my ultimate design:
My basic design is similar to panel desks that you can get from Ikea or Dania. I included a hutch to hold the monitors and a few items above the desk surface. On the right side, I have 3 drawers with the bottom drawer capable of holding file folders (though that’s not what I use it for).
On the left side, I created an open compartment to hold my computer (I have a Mac Pro) along with any little equipment I might need (see the Edirol FA-66 used for recording guitar and voice).
On the back, I put a shelf so that I can mount power strips. As you can see, I have a lot of devices needing power. The shelf keeps the cables from cluttering the floor though I’d need another panel to cover the whole thing if I wanted to hide the clutter entirely (I didn’t think that was practical).
I’ve used the desk for a few months and have really been happy with it. I do work at it standing though it wouldn’t be great if I didn’t have the chair.
