Past Projects – Home Theater Cabinets

I figured that I would show some of my projects that I have done over the past years.

My first Past Project is actually version 2 of my Home Theater Cabinets. Version 2 was done for 2 major reasons. First, I replaced a rear screen projection TV with another one that was bigger and HDTV. Second, I didn’t make the shelves adjustable nor was there any ventilation in the cabinet. My major design goals were to have it fit the look of the TV which was piano black. Instead of piano black, I went with a black stain on oak. I also wanted the cabinets to tie into the room and I used the doors to do that by making them cherry like the mantle in the room.

Next, I wanted to ensure that I had adequate ventilation. I accomplished this by having pass through vents in each shelf and also top vents since heat rises. I placed 2 round and one 12″ vent in the top of the cabinet. I also made every shelf vented so that heat could rise from the lowest component.

My last goal was to make the shelves adjustable so that I could adapt to component gear changes. I made a lot of shelves including extra (stored in the attic until I need them someday).

Overall, they have really fit well into the room and accomplished my design goals.  I have changed some gear so that the adjustability has come into play.  I have noticed the venting works really well with plenty of hot air coming out.  The cabinets are nearly the exact height of the TV and the doors have aged to match the fireplace mantle very well.
